VMware Data Center Virtualization Fundamentals VCA-DCV Exam Study Notes

VMware Data Center Virtualization Fundamentals

Identify which VMware products help solve business and technical challenges with regard to Data Center Virtualization

vCenter – centralized platform for management features:

vMotion
DRS
DPM
Storage vMotion
Storage DRS
vSphere Data Protection
High Availability (HA)
Fault Tolerance (FT)
vSphere Replication

vMotion:
migrate running VM, even during business hours, providing HA.
vMotion is a migration process
VM is just a large chunk of memory on ESXi host(so just need to transfer memory for vMotion)
Data Storage concepts
network concepts
VMware Data Center Products

Distrusted Resource Scheduler (DRS)
service monitors memory and CPU load on ESXi hosts, to monitor for “hot spots”, to make decisions for which ESXi host to run VM on…vMotion can do this automatically via DRS among the “resource pool” of the ESXi hosts.
DRS maintains rules that match your business objectives
can Define that a particular VM must run on a specific host, for example if you have hardware based licensing

Distributed Power Management (DPM)
vMotion guest VMs to other ESXi hosts to power down ESXi hosts during low activity, creating a Standby Host Server, then can restart ESXi via wake on lan or POI power on request, during peak usage again, and uses DRS to load balance against ESXi hosts.

Storage vMotion
Allows your to move VM host harddrives from one datastore to another datastore while running
also using during storage datastore upgrades
any supported storage types
can move from datastore to local ESXi host

Storage DRS
Monitor storage habits of VMs
load balancer for storage, disk i/o
grouped data stores into clusters
manual or auto with Storage vMotion
Storage I/O Control – optimize writing to data store (QoS) between VM and writing/reading to datastore

vSphere Data Protection (VDP)
Backup and Restore
VMs create image-based backups – Bare-metal in physical world
Can still restore individual files from image-based backup
VDP uses data duplication, bundled with most editions of vCenter Server
VADP – Open set of APIs, for 3rd party vendors to do image-based backups

High Availability (HA)
Minimize downtime protects against Hardware failures
each VM has a special set of software and drivers
HA talking to all ESXi hosts, to restart VMs
HA can watch applications as well

Fault Tolerance (FT)

Protect against hardware failures interruptions
to protect against reboots by running secondary VM on a separate host.
mirror VMs amongst Resource Pool, active clustering inside a datacenter cluster

vSphere Replication
Disaster Recovery off site copies
or branch office to corporate
creates replica that can be powered up at any time the primary fails
also monitors the status of the replication

What do we need to make this stuff work?
Shared Storage
-Storage Array, shared storage that is visible to multiple ESXi hosts, used to store VMs and ISO files
-Features that require shared storage, DRS, DPM, Storage DRS, HA and FT
Storage Types
-Fibre Channel, FCoE, iSCSI and NFS also local storage is supported by vSphere
VSA
-Shared storage features, vSphere Storage Appliance, created shared storage from ESXi hosts local disks or shared virtual storage
vFlash – pool of SSD in ESXi hosts, improves VM disk read performance while reducing loads on SAN
Datastores
-logical storage, or “hard drive” to store vm files and iso images.
-Two Types:
VMFS-built on local, iSCSI, Fiber Channel or FCoE
NFS-built on NAS

Networking
-IP Storage: iSCSI, NFS, FCoE
-vCenter Management: vMotion, HA, DRS
-VM Communication: VM Network Traffic
Virtual networking- using software to emulate hardware switches
Virtual switches- just software that works like hardware
-Standard and Distributed Switch Architecture:
Standard: manages virtual machine and network at HOST level
Distributed: manages vm and network at DATA CENTER level
Advanced networking features:
VLANS
Traffic Shaping
Port Mirroring
QoS, DSCP
CDP/LLDP

vSphere Product Placement:
vSphere_5-5_Editions_Feature_Chart

Data Center Virtualization Products:
vCenter Operations Manager
-Monitor trends, works with vCenter server to create categories: Health, Risk and Efficiency
-Dynamically adjusting thresholds
-Monitor current capacity

vCenter Configuration Manager
-Change discovery and correlation
-Configuration Analysis
-Auto correlating changes to performance issues
-Regulatory Compliance
-Security Tool, to harden and audit configurations

vCentere Site Recovery Manager(SRM)
-Disaster Recovery
-Data Center Migration:vSphere Replication, Storage Replication
